What Does A Comprehensive Eye Exam Include?

A comprehensive eye exam can include a variety of tests and may require your pupils to be dilated.

Your eye exam may include the following tests:

• Visual Acuity — to test how well you can see near and far
• Glaucoma — an evaluation of the optic nerve with intraocular pressure measurement.
• Color Blindness — to assess if you can detect the full spectrum of colors
• Ophthalmoscopy — to examine blood vessels, retina, and optic nerve
• Slit Lamp — to screen for a variety of common eye diseases and conditions
• Visual Fields — to test for defects in your field of vision
• Retinal Photo Screening —  to document retinal or optic nerve disease
• Retinoscopy — to help estimate your prescription requirements for eyeglasses

How Often Do I Need a Comprehensive Eye Exam?

In most cases, your eye doctor will recommend a yearly comprehensive eye exam. However, if you have underlying conditions that put you at a higher risk, more frequent exams may be recommended.
